メッセージ

平成25年9月1日付けで、動物生命科学研究センターの教授を拝命致しました。
私は、東北大学理学部を卒業後、同大大学院(藤井義明教授)に進学し、内分泌撹乱ホルモンによる薬物代謝酵素の遺伝子発現機構の研究や、低酸素による遺伝子発現制御の研究に従事しました。その9年間、週末も含めて研究三昧の毎日を過ごしました。その後私は、トロントのRossant博士の研究室に留学し、血管形成の研究を行いました。随分研究に時間を割きましたが、凍った池の上でポスドクや学生達とアイスホッケーを楽しんだのは良い思い出です。この時代に、一生の友人達が出来たのはかけがえの無いことだった、と今では思います。研究を通して様々な国の人たちと友達になっていくことを楽しむのと同時に、人とコミュニケーションを積極的に図るということが自身の研究の進展自体に重要であることも認識させられました。今でも、論文を読み、研究テーマを考え、実験室で研究したりすることと並んで、学会やセミナーの会場で自身の研究の話を紹介し、新しい人に出会っていくことがとても重要であると認識しています。
帰国後、筑波大学基礎医学系解剖学・発生学教室(高橋智教授)の講師として教育および研究に従事しました。教育は、医学生への組織学総論部分、人体発生学の講義を担当しました。理学系大学院を卒業した私には、一から学ぶべき事が多く有りましたが、正常の人体構造がいかに先天異常の理解に役立つのか理解することは楽しい事でした。研究は、自身で選んだテーマであったため、つまらない研究をしても全て自身の責任というプレッシャーを感じながら研究に勤しみました。同時期に、所属研究室が動物センターの遺伝子改変マウスの作製部門の管理・運営を行なっていた関係で、遺伝子改変ベクターの効率的な構築手法を立ち上げるなど、その管理に寄与しました。結局、この動物センターでの経験があって、この度拝命することになったのだと思います。
これまで自分が歩いてきた研究の道を振り返ると、46歳にして漸く教授職を拝命するまでに、多数の職に応募し、面接を受け、落ち続けてきました。私が任期のない職に就いたのは44歳の時が最初です。それまでは任期付の職を乗り継いて来たわけですから、博士号を得てから実に17年間もの長期間ワインディングロードを歩きながら、やっとこさ教授職に辿り着いたというのが実際のところです。今後私に出来る事は、これからワインディングロードを歩いてくる若手の研究者達に、少しでも研究の楽しさとともに歩き方を伝えていくことです。
今後は他の研究者と共同研究を精力的に進めることで、自身の研究を推進するのはもちろんのこと、学内外の研究者の研究支援を行なっていく所存です。皆様には今後ともご指導、ご鞭撻を賜りますよう、よろしくお願い申し上げます。
